Students understand that the lines in between the whole numbers are fractions. Think of a ruler and all those lines you see between whole numbers. Those are fractions! The ruler above is divided into fourths. So, between 0 and 1, the space is divided into fourths. Between 1 and 2, the space is divided into fourths and so on. The fractions written in red is one way to label the lines and the fractions written in green is another way to label the lines. Take notice to the patterns as you label. What do you notice?
