#FractionNumberLine #ThirdGrade

My students have been begging me to post about all the fun we’ve been having with fractions. This tells me many of them are using my posts as a resource and it sounds like they enjoy the posts too!

The picture above shows a number line.  The students divided each line into fractional parts. First they were asked to find half of each line (except for thirds and the one whole line). They used the same color to draw the line to represent equivalent fractions. For example, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 are all equivalent and are all red. We divided the next line into thirds using green. We labeled 1/3 and  2/3. Then we used green to label the equivalent fractions on the line that is sixths. We labeled 2/6 and made sure it was lined up with 1/3 because they are equivalent. We labeled 4/6 and made sure it was lined up with 2/3 because they are equivalent. Next we labeled 1/4 and 3/4 orange. Then we used orange to label the equivalent fractions, which are 2/8 and and 6/8. Again, we made sure they were lined up. Last, we labeled the rest of the fractions yellow.

This is an excellent tool for students when learning equivalent fractions and when comparing fractions.
